Future planning can help instil hope

📰 Newsletter

As this year moves toward its close, a common topic of conversation is plans for the new year - resolutions, goals, and adventures. While discussions about these kinds of aspirations for the future are often full of hope, they may be challenging for some people.

When a person is struggling, it can be difficult for them to see that life can get better and to think that making plans for their future is worthwhile. However, once they are starting to feel better, helping them plan for events they can look forward to can offer a source of hopefulness. These can be small things - perhaps reconnecting with a friend or family member, starting a new project, or engaging in a favourite pastime.

You could try saying:

“I remember you telling me that you were hoping to reconnect with your aunt when you were feeling a bit stronger. When might you be ready to do that? How can I support you in that conversation?”

“I understand it may be hard right now to make plans for a long way down the road. Let’s start small … what can we plan together for the next week or month that can help you continue to find hope and support your recovery?”

These conversations show that you believe that they will feel better and that they can look to the future without putting pressure on them to do something they aren’t prepared for. This both helps the person look ahead with hope while also demonstrating your commitment to their work towards recovery.
