How to express a commitment when your time is limited

📰 Newsletter

The SafeSide Framework encourages us to express a commitment to recovery– not just immediate safety when interacting with someone struggling with mental health or suicide concerns. That’s the origin of the phrase “More than safety.”

Many of us have time-limited roles. Mobile crisis teams, intake staff, and emergency department professionals have brief but critical interactions with people experiencing suicidal distress. How do you commit to a person’s recovery in these moments?

  • Express the commitment of your entire team to their recovery. For example, you can say: “As a team, we are committed to supporting your recovery; our job is to support your goals…”
  • Commit to the specific role you play in their life. For example, you can say: “I can see that you are going through a painful time; my role tonight is to make sure that you get the best care possible while in the Emergency Department…”
  • Commit to the principles of recovery-oriented practice in all decisions.  For example, “ I am concerned about you tonight, and if you want, we can find a bed for you here, but I can see that you would prefer to be in your own home… Let's work together to find a plan that respects that...”

By communicating these commitments, you can make a significant difference to those you serve. By creating a compassionate, supportive environment, you can foster hope and empower individuals on their journey to recovery.
